Brighty wandered freely between the rim and the river, often spending summers near the Grand Canyon Lodge, long before it was ever fully developed. He carried water for workers during construction, kept trail crews company, and even became the subject of a beloved children’s book by Marguerite Henry, later adapted into a film.

The recent Dragon Bravo Fire, which swept through the North Rim and destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, has shaken all who hold this place dear. The loss is heartbreaking—iconic structures gone, memories turned to ash, and a closure that has left communities displaced and stunned. But if there’s anything the story of Brighty teaches us, it’s this: resilience runs deep in the canyon.

Brighty didn’t stick to easy trails or avoid hardship. He navigated steep, rugged terrain with sure footing and stubborn determination. He weathered harsh winters, dry summers, and countless encounters with canyon wildlife and humans alike. He kept going—faithful, free-spirited, and unshaken.

That same spirit endures today. In the face of fire and loss, the canyon’s people—rangers, residents, guides, and guests—are rallying with courage and resolve. Rebuilding efforts are already beginning. Community support is growing. And just like Brighty’s memory lives on, so too will the legacy of the Grand Canyon Lodge and those who called it home.

The North Rim will heal. And when it does, it will do so with the same quiet strength and grit that once marked the trail of a little burro named Brighty—proof that while flames can take buildings, they can’t burn away hope.
